Return Nth Character In A Cell Starting From The Left
Nov 15, 2006
How do I return the Nth Character in a cell starting from the left.
For example, cell A1 has the word "Baseball". What formula will give me the 6th character to the right, which would be "a"?

I've created a user form that has a list box populated with a fairly standardized format - a product ID or model number followed by a dash ( - ) then followed by a description. Based on the users selection of an item in the listbox, certain rows will be copied over from another tab in the excel file.
An error occurs when a Model Number list box item is selected but not when a product ID is selected.
The difference between the two are AlphaNumeric vs only numeric.
USBLT15CMB - Product Description 1
1121 - Product Description 2
the code is:
Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Dim ID As Long
Dim Row As Long
Dim Cnt As Long
[Code]...
The macro stops on the ID = line

Could someone tell me if the following formula is valid?
=AND(F15="R*", I15>0)
I want to know if F15 contains 'R' or 'RW' but using a wildcard always returns false whether this correct or not.

I would like to create a macro that deletes all rows starting with an open parenthensis in column B. The contents of what is in parenthis varies from 2 letters up - so anything starting with a parenthis is sufficient criteria.
After the initial deleting (mentioned above), would also like to delete (from column B again), rows containing specific, multiple phrases.
None of the functions I have see so far will facilitate this...

Sub TrimSlashesToRight()
Dim cell As Range
For Each cell In Range("AN2:AN2000")
cell = Left(cell, InStr(cell, "//") -1)
Next
End Sub
I cannot get it to run this, it always crashes on
cell = Left(cell, InStr(cell, "//") -1)
It will work fine like:
cell = Left(cell, InStr(cell, "//") + 0)
but then it leaves the first / in place, i want it to start deleteing before both //.

Pretty sure this has been asked but have searched the forum to no avail, but I need to extract the numbers from a value which has a letter on the end.
eg. 1000x I need to get out the 1000
or 2p I need the 2
I have sooooo many values ranging in numbers of digits, so just basic left(A1,2) won't work, I'm sure I've seen a search or find function but don't know how to use them!

I want to select email addresses in a particular cell. Since every email address will contain @ so I want to extract the email address from the cell on the basis os all the characters to be selected on the left & right of the '@' before a space is encountered.
Eg
If the cell contains the below values:
91 121 5158123 / 5159123, 011 5103710
91 999 999 1123
info@designs.com
I only want the email address to extracted to the next cell. i.e. info@designs.com

I need the formula for statistical data analysis for a research project i'm helping out with, and this is too complicated for me to know where to even begin searching for the information. The problem is this:
I have a sheet (called Sheet1) containing 9009 rows of information on columns A to AL. I am interested in searching for the starting sequences of codes contained in column AI and returning values on the same row but in a different column. The formula that works so far is this (note: I use Excel 2003 and a swedish version, translated the formulas though)
=IF(ISNA(MATCH("N06*";Sheet1!AI:AI;0));"error";INDIRECT(ADDRESS(MATCH("N06*";Sheet1!AI:AI;0)*1;1;1;T RUE;"Sheet1")))
I havent come up with this formula entirely on my own so dont think my expertise is this high In any case, this formula gives me the value of the A-column in the same row as the first N06 found in the AI column. If N06 isn't found anywhere in AI, it gives me "error". The problem is this: I want it to "continue" searching column AI for strings starting with N06 and returning the values in the A-column for the following N06s found. I basically want to wash out all rows of information that dont contain the string N06 in AI, and get the new information on another sheet.
To make it even clearer: I want to have all values on column A on a new sheet, but only where the AI value on the same row starts with N06. Eventually I want other columns as well, and also search for other codes, but that should be easy to figure out once I get the initial formula.

I have a 2010 excel sheet containing 14 columns and 45082 rows in total. I am quite illiterate when it comes to writing macros but I know that what I need can be achieved with a set of codes.
To be more clear, I inserted two tables below. The first one represents the current data structure, and the second one is the way I want my data to look like.
Current data structure looks like
Variable 1
Variable 2
Variable 3

I'm trying to go down column a, look for a certain word, let's say 'excel', then return the value in the cell four cells to the right.
My best guest was
=offset(search("excel",a:a),0,4)
But the search function and the find function really aren't built for that.

I have two worksheets. The first one contains 500 rows:
Column A - Company Name
Column J - Formula that calculates a 'company score' based on other data in columns B-H
Column K - Number of directors
The second worksheet contains over 3000 rows:
Column A - Name
Column B - Company
Column C - Designation
I want to caculate a score for each person (from worksheet 2) that does the following:
Personal Score = ('Company Score' / No. of directors) * Designation Weighting
Where Designation Weighting (numerical value) is determined by Designation (text). There are 10 different and mutually exclusive types of text in the Designation column.
My problem is compounded by the fact that each person (in worksheet 2) can be directors on several companies. The Personal Score that I want to calculate needs to recognise which different companies they are directors of and sum the scores derived from each company.

I have an Excel file that quiries Google for driving distance (someone helped me with this.) It returns the correct miles but has some 'extra' characters. Example:
31.1&nb or 886&nbs
So the answer always has &nbs after the mileage. I tried the following function which works when there is a decimal but fails when there is not. =REPLACE(MID(E2,1,SEARCH("&",E2,1)-1),SEARCH(".",E2,1),1,","). Can this be done with a function or must it be VB script? Which is fine if it is.

I'm looking for a VBA Macro that will do the following:
1. Count number of cells in a given row that contain special character "*"
2. If there is an asterisk in a given row, return the column header(s) contained in row 1 of the spreadsheet that correspond to each instance of cell(s) that contains the "*".
Is there a way to do this? I've attached an example of what I'm talking about, (Column A shows the desired result.)

I've been given a spreadsheet that is poorly constructed but I'm not allowed to alter.
The layout is:
Box Name Box Date ID1 ID2 ID3 ....
Where there is not a fixed number of IDs in each box
(There are five different sheets so I'll have some fun concatenating results)
Given a list of IDs I need to return the box name and box date that the ID's file sits in. The spreadsheet has blanks everywhere and the numbers contained in rows are non-consecutive and smaller values can appear later in a column than larger ones.
I think I need some combination of index, offset and maybe sumproduct? TBH, I avoid sumproducts like the plague, preferring to utilise sumifs and dynamic named ranges since this improves clarity so I'm basically a newb at them.
Any skeleton framework that you think would work to return the text values for the LHS where the number could be anywhere? Once I can see a rough example I should be able to get to grips with the logic and wrangle it into the necessary solution.

I have a column that is giving unwanted value . dont know the reason as that excel file has been created by some other guy and I just started working on it .
My Question is how to move to 2 cells left(A for example) from from that unwanted value column. and check if
A is equal to cell above it , means B Cell(Row above A but same column).
As my excel file is totally based on Forms, Macros, I am not quite familiar with macros.
Is there any way to put if condition in one cell (column) and drag it all the way down which should work for all the values in these 3 column.
And also if A=B then I want to make that unwanted value cell="".

I'm trying to do a vlookup but I want to be able to change the table array starting point depending upon a defined cell header. so
=vlookup(a1,sheet1!b1:c5,2,false) where b: would be defined by a header as
=vlookup(a1,sheet1!header name:header name+1,2,false).
So it will work much in the same way as match does for VLOOKUP
($A2,'Sheet 1'!$A:$FG,MATCH(AP$1,'sheet 1'!$1:$1,0),FALSE) but the array needs to change.
By doing this my vlookup will work automatically depending upon the header.

What will be a formula (assume range starts on cell named “BegRng”)?

Continuing with a large Macro I am trying to peice together, I have reached a hurdle where I need to hide all columns to the left of the ActiveCell (which varies week to week) back to column B.
I have the following code which selects the correct number of cells to the left of the active cell but doesn't highlight the whole columns - just 3 cells for each column (very odd)
ActiveCell.Offset(0, -1).Range("A1").Select
Range(Selection, "B" & Selection.Column).Select
I'm sure it must be something to do with the
Selection.Column
part as when I write
Selection.Row
it just does 1 cell for each column (as to be expected)
I should mention I already have the coding to hide the columns, just need a way to highlight the relevant ones.
