Index Function With Multiple Ifs Won't Return More Than First Result

Aug 11, 2014

I am attempting to get an INDEX function with multiple "IF" statements to return more than one result. Building multiple IF statements. That portion of the below formula works. However, I can only get the INDEX formula to return the first, single result.

Formula:
=IFERROR(INDEX(Func_Area,SMALL(IF(Const_Start<=DATE(YEAR($B$2),MONTH($B$2),DAY($B$2)), IF(Cost_End>=DATE(YEAR($C$2),MONTH($C$2),DAY($C$2)),ROW(Func_Area)-MIN(ROW(Func_Area))+1,"")),ROWS($A$4:A4)))," ")

Func_Area,Const_Start,Cost_End are all Named Ranges on Sheet "Proposed". My intention is to return a list of projects on Sheet Test1 for all projects starting construction after a certain date and completing construction before a certain date. I suspect something in my ROWS fuction or ROW-MIN+1 is wrong.

This formula returns the first result in the first row, but every subsequent row is blank...see attached spreadsheet.

Return Result From Match Not In Index?

Nov 10, 2011

What I want to do is, given the data in col. a, I want to supply a number(range) of strings which can be found in column a, whenever a string is found, which exists in given range, I want to write the string from the Key(col. c) in col b instead of the value from the string that matches a value.

See below for example of what I got working but not exactly what I was looking for

Col. A- Data
Orangegreen
Blackwhite
Blueyellow

Col. B - Result

Col. C - Keys
Orange
White
Yellow

I used

Code:
=INDEX(A1:A3,MATCH("*"&C1&"*",A1:A3,0))

This does produce a result, but not entirely what I am after.

This requires only one string to search for, and will in cell B1 result in a value of 'Orangegreen' as I can only supply one valeu to the function. What I want to do is supply the function with a range of values, and have those values outputtet in colb instead af the value of cells where the result is found.

I tried modifying the function to include a range, but that does not produce a valid result.

Index Function Working Correctly When Hit F9 But Returns Different Result

Aug 22, 2012

I'm compiling a list of names on a separate tab from a column that only lists the names sporadically. Problem: In the formula, the IF provides a TRUE, the row function, and consequently, the INDEX function (when I hit F9) provides the correct "name" and row number, but when I hit return, it provides the text 4 cells beneath what it should.

IF Function To Return No Data As A Result

Nov 29, 2007

I've created a Database using excel which feeds data to a pivot table I created based on it. My objective is to create a new item in this pivot table (Pivot Table > Formulas > Calculated Item) which calculates the average data for the past 6 months.
The formula I used in order to get a result is this:

=IF(((May+June+July+August+September+October)/6)=0;;(May+June+July+August+September+October)/6)

and the problem is that the answer is 0 when there is no data for all 6 months (for example, there is a customer who hasn't baught anything during the past 6 months), the pivot table displays 0, instead of not showing this customer at all. My goal is for the IF function not to return any data if the result is 0, so that the pivot table doesn't show items with no data.
I also tried:
=IF(((May+June+July+August+September+October)/6)=0;"";(May+June+July+August+September+October)/6)

and also using ;" ";

but these formulas return #VALUE! in the pivot table, given that the Data is "SUM OF Sales" and "" is not a number.

How can I get the formula not to show anything at all?

In addition to this, I was wondering if it is possible to make this formula more automated, so that it calculates the average of the past 6 months, taking into account some type of reference month (rather than having to edit the formula each time a new month is analyzed).

Function To Accept 2 Criterias And Return Result

What function/formula can I use if I want that function to accept 2 criterias and returns me a result. Based on the above example, if the criterias are Alan & MOn, it will return 400 and if the criterias are Tom and Mon, it will return 200 and if the criterias are James and MOn, it will return 1000. Bascially, I want a function that can accepts 2 criterias. I do not want to sum up the total of the rows that are associated with one of the criteria i.e Alan. For Alan, I want 400 instead of 1000

I have several records that I am doing a lookup through. Most records have the same "work order number". As you can see on the attached sheet, my lookup function returns all the work order numbers that match my criteria.

What I need is to only return the first instance of the work order number then return the next unique work order number that meets my criteria.

Formula To Return Array To Use In Index / Match Function?

May 8, 2013

I need to find a way to find an array in a tab to use for an index/match function I have.

this is what i would normally use: =index(tab_array,match($a2, tab!$a$1:$a$1000,0),match($B$1,tab!$a$1:$zz$1,0))

This formula would usually work fine when I know that within the tab, the array in which the row match is searching doesn't change. However, that array may change in the future, to say column H, without my knowing as it is a database that gets automatically populated from an upstream system.

Is there a way to search for an array within an index/match?

Excel 2007 :: Using INDEX And MATCH Function To Return Header Value

Mar 26, 2013

currently using Excel 2007 with Windows Vista.

I currently have a worksheet where I want to input a date (G2) and a rank value (H2) ranging from 1 to 4. The header value (B1:E1) corresponding to the date (A2:A4) and the rank (B2:B4) should be returned to I2 (currently returns #NA).

Using formula: =INDEX($B$1:$E$1,MATCH(H2,INDEX($B$2:$E$4,MATCH(G2,$A$2:$A$4),)))

which I found under: Find row, find value, then return column heading

However, the above formula does not seem to work with my date order or recurring data values of 1 to 4 over the 3 rows.

The worksheet layout is as follows:

Date

A

B
C
D

Date

Rank

Header

[code]....

The return value under Header should be C.

I have reversed the order of the dates and put sequential numbers in B2:B4 as plug variables and the above formula will return the correct Header value but I need the formula to work with the current date order and repeating rank values of 1 to 4 in B2:B4. Do not wish to use VBA.

Compare Values In Multiple Columns And Return A Result

Mar 17, 2009

I have a spreadsheet with three years worth of data for a property I manage. Each column has cost data for the year and the specific department/cost for that year as the row value.

I have a column between the years that calculates the percent of gross revenue for the specific department/cost.

I would like to find (or create) a formula that will compare the percentage (or specific cost) for the three years within the specific row and if the increase year over year over year exceeds a trigger value it returns something (check me out/true/false) whatever.

The cost items for the property are in the hundreds so I'm trying to come up with a way to quickly see what specific cost items are going up (or down) more rapidly then what would be considered normal.

Can Index Or Match Return Multiple Results

Nov 27, 2006

I've spent the last week trying to do the following, with little to no success....and I'm running out of hair to pull out!!

I have a worksheet (let's call it DATA) with the following column headers:
* Site Name
* Year Initiated
* Status

plus a whole bunch of other columns of information.

On a separate worksheet (let's call it RESULTS) I'm trying to create a summary of all the Site Names where the Year Initiated = "2004" and the Status = "Active". There will be multiple occurences where this is true.

I then want to create further results where the year = 2005, 2006, etc., etc. I've been trying to use the INDEX function with variations of MATCH, SMALL, ROW, etc., etc., but so far, no luck.

Advanced Filtering is not an option as I need to do further manipulating of the results on the RESULTS worksheet.

How To Use Index Function When Have Multiple Matches

Sep 27, 2012

So here is how I have a template laid out:

A
B
C
D
E
F

ROW 1

Period 10
Period 11

[Code] ........

Cell E4: =SUMIF('P10-2011'!$A$4:$A$272,'Budget Upload'!$A19,'P10-2011'!$H$4:$H$272)

I have a SumIF statement in cell E4 but I would much prefer some sort of index or something where I can drag the formula down because the cells in column D will change (and require me to pick a different SUM range for my SUMIF function). Now my issue is I have multiple matches so when I use a typical index it returns the FIRST match.

Here is the formula I used in cell E11 to try and replicate the result in E5:
=INDEX('P10-2011'!$A$2:$Y$272,MATCH('Budget Upload'!$A4,'P10-2011'!$A$2:$A$272,0),MATCH('Budget Upload'!$D4,'P10-2011'!$A$2:$Y$2,0))

My index function works as it is designed but only returns the FIRST match. I should have multiple matches.

Is there a way to use an index function to return multiple results?

To clarify,the index function I put in cell F4 returns only ONE column (which is correct and will always be correct), which is related to the cell D4 but I have multiple rows (related to "7002" row match portion of the index function).

Index Function - Data Identified Based On A List Of Account Numbers And Return This Data To A New Sheet

May 8, 2007

I have a multiple column spreadsheet (Call it- "Money") whereby I need the data identified based on a list of account numbers and return this data to a new sheet.

In "Money" I have:

IE; columns B, C respectively have cust #A100 & 20.00
columns E, F respectively have cust #B100 & 40.00
columns G,H respectively have cust #C100 & 60.00
Etc.

So what I have now is a new sheet I have named "Control". I have listed all my account numbers like A100,B100 etc. in column A. These are the account numbers for ident purposes.

I need the data entered in "Money" identified by those columns B,E,G with respective amounts from C,F,H and based on the list I have in "Control" whereby in "Control" if A100 is listed in column A then the figure to be returned in column B is all the data bits found in all columns C,F,H from the entire sheet "Money". Index And / Or Match Formula With Multiple Match Required To Return A Value

Jan 21, 2014

See attached file, "Rate Sample Index-Match Formula".

I need a formula to return the value at the cross section of two (2) lookup values that match. This formula will be input into column D under, "RATE" on the 1st tab, "TEST FILE".

In the 1st tab, "TEST FILE" there are a series of columns as follows;

A = Service
B = From
C = To
D = Rate

In the 2nd tab, "RATES" there is a series of rates with drivers From (green) & To (blue)

The formula needs to do the following;

1. Lookup the "From" value in column B on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to column B2:B59 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in green
2. Then Lookup the "To" value in column C on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to row C1:BH1 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in blue
3. Then return the value at the cross section of the match "From" (point 1 above) & "To" (point 2 above) in range C2:BH59

For Example;

The rate From SYD To CBR = 0.33. I have highlighted this in yellow on both tabs to show where the formula needs to lookup the data to return the answer.

Additionally, if we were to add service as an additional lookup match how would this work?

My column headings are as follows...
Type Region Contact Phone Email ADD1 ADD2 ADD3

In column A (type) would be the type of contact eg:business/personal/family etc.

So... If looking for family I'd need excel to show me the region, contact, phone, email, add1, add2 & add3 for each family record. Hope this makes sense!
